red rising is awesome

Hey everyone!

This is a spoiler-free review of one of my favourite trilogies EVER.

Rating: 5/5 Stars.

I hadn’t actually heard about this book before. And I feel like majority of fellow readers probably haven’t really heard of it, either. Despite that, it has over 9000 reviews on Amazon, and is a 5 star rated book! In my opinion, the thrill of the book is unmatched as well as the plot.

So whats it about?

So due to overpopulation on Earth, Civilians are transferred to Mars. They live there, have kids there, their kids have kids… they have families and settle. There is a social class system in which Golds are at the top as they are the strongest. There are silvers, bronzes, pinks, purples; a couple more colours, and down at the bottom is the Reds.

Darrow was born a Red, his father was a Red; they are thought to be the lowest of the civilisation. They work in mines, are always very hungry and low on food; malnourished and hopeless. A close person to Darrow gets killed by a Gold and that is when he makes a decision.

He cant see more of the people he loves starve or get killed. He cant bear the thought that for generations, this will continue happening. More and more lives will be lost and there will be no change. Because they are at the bottom and no one cares about their lives.

So Darrow comes up with a plan.

He fakes being a Gold to get in the inside, and take them all out.

In the main trilogy, there is three books. It took me about two weeks to finish (which is probably the longest I’ve ever taken!)

The plot is written really well. The story is never slow, and at a constant thrilling pace; keeps you on edge constantly in a way where the whole book is a cliffhanger. Its really gripping and emotive as well, the way it is written gives you a deep emotional connection with Darrow making you sympathise and experience the story with him.

I think my favourite thing about this book is simply the way it is written; extremely funny at times, quite sad at others; completely thrilling all the time. The story felt real and you could never guess what was going to happen next, there were constant plot twists!

So would I recommend this book? 💯 Yes.

I would like to disclaim that the book does contain bad language and violence so I would recommend it for 13+. Its at your discretion 🤷‍♀️.
